Desiree's Story: From Fear to Freedom

"I'm a 69-year-old formerly very active female. Two years ago, I got a blister on my left little toe. I was not aware that — because I previously had sepsis — this was a serious risk to me. The blister became infected. After two weeks it had not healed so I went to my doctor. By then, it was already too late to save the little toe and the one next to it. They had to amputate both toes."

"This was crazy and took months to recover, and I had to learn to walk again. They prescribed orthotics and special orthopedic shoes that were supposedly to help me, at a cost of $1,500. The worst of it — besides constantly falling — was the fear of falling, and feeling completely off balance while wearing the 'special' shoes. Not to mention the orthopedic shoes were downright ugly."
