The Day Everything Changed

In April 2015, a serious accident changed Darren's life in an instant.
The injuries were severe and wide-ranging — but the most life-altering damage was to both of his heels. The recovery was long and gruelling, involving multiple surgeries and years of rehabilitation. Learning to walk again became the challenge of a lifetime.

He was airlifted to hospital — a moment captured in a photo his friend took as the helicopter lifted off.

The Long Road to Recovery

For over ten years, Darren searched for footwear that his feet could actually tolerate.
He tried all the big name brands. Some were comfortable at first, but the snug, laced-up fit created constant pressure that his feet simply couldn't handle. As a builder who spends long hours on his feet, finding the right work boot was hard enough — he eventually tracked down a steel-cap boot from Italy, at nearly $400 a pair. But casual footwear? That remained an unsolved puzzle. You see, Darren has always been a barefoot kind of guy. Growing up in New Zealand, he lived in jandals (that's flip-flops, for the rest of us) or bare feet whenever he could. His feet were happiest with nothing on them — but they had also become extremely sensitive, making even short walks on uneven ground a struggle.
